Dubious Conclusions of Victor Davis Hanson
He should stick to screwing up ancient history, instead of mangling the recent past. Here is part of his excreble column about Pearl Harbor and Bush’s GWOTOAATIPVOUME*, where he can’t figure out why Bush’s attack against ersatz threats haven’t been as successful as FDR’s war against real ones which actually attacked us.
It’s been five years since Sept. 11. After such a terrible provocation, why can’t we bring the ongoing “global war on terror” — whether in Afghanistan, Iraq or elsewhere — to a close as our forefathers fighting World War II could?
Is our generation less competent?
Not really.
What a blathering idiot is Victor Davis Hanson. This is an easy call.
One of our greatest presidents, FDR, versus one of our worst, W.
A legendary Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn, versus one of the least effectual, Denny Hastert.
A plain-speaking Vice President, Harry Truman, versus a mealy-mouthed, “F”-bomb dropping, face-shooting, profiteer-enabling Dick Cheney.
Secretary Henry Stimson, who went to war with the Army he wanted and built, versus Donald “weeks not months” Rumsfeld who went to war with the Army he had.
George Marshall versus Richard Myers.
Dwight Eisenhower versus Tommy Franks.
George Patton versus Ricardo Sanchez.
Is our generation less competent?
If you mean our generation of military and political leadership, the answer is a resounding “YES!” even though the obvious eludes VDH.
FDR didn’t respond to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor by launching an invasion of Spain, to finish off what Cousin Teddy had started at San Juan Hill but failed to finish, because everyone knew that Franco was a dictator and in cahoots with Hitler — even though Franco actually did have operational ties to with the Nazi regime.
It’s all about the competence. We’ve been saddled with a lack of it at the highest levels.
