This is fucking brilliant. . .

Wingnut blogger Confederate Yankee, posting a rebuttal from pro-war blogger/reporter Michael Yon to an article in Newsday reporting chaos in Basra in the wake of the British Army pulling its forces out of Basra and halting military operations in that city:

Basra is not in chaos. In fact, crime and violence are way down and there has not been a British combat death in over a month.

Of course, as noted above, the British army pulled out of Basra just over one month ago. Could there be a connection between the absence of British troops in Basra and the fact that the troops who aren’t in Basra weren’t killed there?

Meanwhile, today’s LA Times reports:

In the southern city of Basra, there are already signs of religious extremism being used to rein in women. Police say gangs enforcing their idea of Islamic law have killed 15 women in the last month. “There are gangs roaming through the streets . . . pursuing women and carrying out threats and killing because of what the women wear or because they are using makeup,” the Basra police commander, Maj. Gen. Abdul Jaleel Khalaf, said this month.

Sometimes notes are left on the women’s bodies saying they were killed for violating religious law or social traditions.

“This is a mockery for us, when you speak about freedom,” said Hanaa Edwar, who heads the Iraqi Amal Assn., a human rights group opposing Article 41. “There will be no choices for women if a man makes a decision that he wants to live a certain way. Step by step, we will end up in a religious state.”

Sounds like chaos to me. Naturally, Right Blogostan will have to instantly devote itself to proving that Maj. Gen. Abdul Jaleel Khalaf doesn’t exist, or lives in too nice a house or goes to a pricey private school.

  1. There are no British troops in Basra, eh?

    You’d better tell them that.

The fact of the matter is though they closed the last of their bases within the city limits, the British Army still maintains bases and outposts around the city and in the coutryside (including at the airport) and they regularly patrol within Basra. Yon has been there with them in and around for roughly a month.

You, of course, will believe what you are told by a reporter based in Washington, DC.

  2. Nice try, Yank.

The reporter quoted in the above post has a Baghdad byline and her source is the police chief of Basra.

And hunkering down at bases outside the city (13 miles outside the city, according to the British defence ministry) is a little different than maintaining patrols in the city, isn’t it? You do understand that “Basra” and “Iraq” are two different things, right? Rather salient, considering the British withdrew from Basra to escape constant mortar fire, which has a tendency to cause casualties.

Yon has been there with them in and around for roughly a month.

Weird, since a couple of weeks ago he posted a story about hunting al Qaeda with American troops, who are well north of Basra, and a commentor on your blog says he’s been there a couple days.

    But, hey, Iraq-Basra, days-months, what’s the diff?

  5. Alex - get your head out of your ass!

1st - Mike Yon has been in Basra and along the Iranian border with the Brits since about Sept 25th. This his second visit to Basra and along the Iranian border - the first time he was there for well into a month.

I have the emails and the phone calls to prove it in both cases, then and now.

Also, I wrote the comment you seem to allude to in your response to Bob and it’s clear you don’t understand what I wrote….but no surprise there.
    Head in ass!

2nd– “Hunting Al Queda” took place in July of this year. The series of dispatches were released in Sept. But you ‘d know that if you actually read them, which you didn’t. But then again you can’t understand what you read - so what’s the diff??

3rd - Con Coughlin writing for the Telegraph UK on Oct 6th

“In the past few weeks there has been a tangible improvement in the security there, particularly since British troops vacated their last outpost in Basra’s city centre at the end of August. Crime in Basra is down 70 per cent, and rocket and mortar attacks against British forces – which were running at more than 90 a day in the summer – have been reduced almost to zero – as Mr Brown experienced for himself this week.”
(The Tide Is Turning In Basra, Oct 6)

He happens to be reporting FROM BASRA - in what he refers to as “a transformed Iraqi city”.

“Indeed, wherever one looks in the British sector, there are grounds to believe that, far from degenerating into all-out civil war, the Iraqis are finally coming to terms with their post-Saddam condition and are starting to acquire the confidence and the institutions necessary for running their affairs.”

So far this matches up to what Mike knows from being back in Basra with the Brits again

    And 4th -
The Brits are based in the southern province of Iraq which includes Basra ,Maysan and 2 other provinces…that’s what the article meant went it spoke of the Brits drawing down troops in Iraq. See the journalist figured any intelligent person understood that British troops + Iraq = four provinces in the southern part of the country which is where the Brits have always been - you freaking moron!! So yeah in this case IRAQ and BASRA ARE THE SAME THING.

So much for your snide ” You do understand that “Basra” and “Iraq” are two different things, right” . It’s obvious YOU don’t understand anything boy genius!

PS —The Brits ARE STILL IN BASRA YOU FREAKING MORON!

“Of the four southern provinces placed under the protection of British forces, three have been handed over to local control, while the fourth, Basra, should be handed over by the end of the year.” ( The Tide Is Turning In Basra- C.Coughlin- Oct 6, 2007)

Oh and this piece of bullshit ” British withdrew from Basra to escape constant mortar fire, which has a tendency to cause casualties.” is classic stupidity.
There isn’t an ounce of truth to that piece of made up malarkey - considering you haven’t gotten a damn thing right so far - this shouldn’t be shocking!

PS - the LA Times, has gotten more “facts” wrong about Iraq, Basra, American Troops, the British and several stories they alleged they were investigating when in fact - they were drinking in the local bar on Sunset. They also couldn’t get facts straight about Mike who they met, interviewed on tape, photographed and yet managed to distort the truth to suit their agenda.

So much so - that the former owners are wrestling control back since the latest fool running the paper decided creating splashy bogus stories to sell the paper to more people was more important than the truth. So if Los Angelenos hate Bush and the military - then lets distort the truth and sell papers.

So having lived in LA,and watching all journalistic integrity go down the tubes to sell papers - I believe nothing of what they have to say about anything - no matter which way the story leans - left or right!

On second thought - keep your head in your ass!
That way you can keep blowing smoke out your mouth. It’s the only contribution you offer mankind and the only possible way to explain how fucking stupid you really are!

  6. 1st - Mike Yon has been in Basra and along the Iranian border with the Brits since about Sept 25th.

That would be a couple of weeks, Tara. Not months. You count about as well as Gomer.

Also, I wrote the comment you seem to allude to in your response to Bob and it’s clear you don’t understand what I wrote….but no surprise there.

Can you put that in English?? Or are you limited to semi-literate rambling.

In the past few weeks there has been a tangible improvement in the security there, particularly since British troops vacated their last outpost in Basra’s city centre at the end of August. . . . . PS —The Brits ARE STILL IN BASRA YOU FREAKING MORON!

Of course they are. That’s why they vacated their last outpost in Basra at the end of August.

So yeah in this case IRAQ and BASRA ARE THE SAME THING.

No, they aren’t you twit. Basra is both a city and a province - the British withdrew from the city a month ago — at which point their combat operations and security responsibilities were radically curtailed. The events referred to in the post and the articles are taking place in the CITY of Basra which is not the same as the COUNTRY of Iraq or even the PROVINCE of Basra.

rocket and mortar attacks against British forces – which were running at more than 90 a day in the summer – have been reduced almost to zero

Right — because they “vacated” the bases in Basra that were getting mortared and rocketed, you little imbecile.

Oh and this piece of bullshit ” British withdrew from Basra to escape constant mortar fire, which has a tendency to cause casualties.” is classic stupidity.

Either you don’t believe that mortar fire causes casualties, or you don’t believe that the Brits withdrew because of the mortar fire which you yourself, in your half-witted way, admit ran to “more than 90 a day in the summer.” Is 90 attacks a day not “constant” in your hare-brained way of thinking?

Bottom line is the Brits left Basra — the city — and their casualties went down because they left. If only we were smart enough to repeat the British success by reducing our own casualties by getting the hell out. Unfortunately, stupid people like you keep that from happening.

It figures that Yanker’s groupies would be even dumber than he is.

Being a foul-mouthed, witless, stupid little asshole is no way to go through life, Tara.

  7. And the reporter quoted in the LA Times piece you mention does NOT have a Baghdad Byline:

“By Tina Susman, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
    October 9, 2007″

(Wow you really do NOT understand what you read)

“Police say gangs enforcing their idea of Islamic law have killed 15 women in the last month. “There are gangs roaming through the streets . . . pursuing women and carrying out threats and killing because of what the women wear or because they are using makeup,” the Basra police commander, Maj. Gen. Abdul Jaleel Khalaf, said this month.

You pithy “Sounds like chaos to me” comment is better off applied to LA where the Crips and Bloods run rampant, & not just in South Central LA anymor, but also in the San Fernando Valley: including Van Nuys and the once family safe Sherman Oaks and Studio City. Gang violence kills more people SOCAL during any given week (sounds like chaos to me!!) than religious fanatics have killed in Basra over the past few weeks—albeit those killings are still sad —but religious fanaticism is problematic throughout the entire Middle East.

In other interviews - The Chief of police has stated that he is committed to stopping those gangs and gang violence. A point this article failed to include. Stop gang violence — hmmm wow— that sounds like the Chief of Police in almost every MAJOR CITY IN THE US especially L.A.

Gang violence — in big cities — ooooooohhhhh “sounds like chaos to me”.

What you fail to note about this piece is that its discussing the process of D E M O C R A C Y — these people are trying to get past sectarian rifts and allow women to become self realized
    - ( ooohh big words - won’t understand) — let see — ah yes… allow women to have control over their own destiny!!

(Sounds like chaos to me - Booboo — yupp sure does Yogi!!)

Iraqi womens rights activists are concerned bout Article 61 that leaves them vulnerable to a draconian interpretation of Islamic law. And this you consider a BAD SITUATION in Iraq.

Iraqi democracy is all of four years old and they already have WOMENES RIGHTS ACTIVISTS!! In the US WOMEN didn’t have rights inferred on them via the US constitution for decades - DECADES!!!

“sounds like chaos to me” !!

  8. And the reporter quoted in the LA Times piece you mention does NOT have a Baghdad Byline:

Actually, she did: that would be the BAGHDAD in all capitals at the start of the article, you idiot. Have you been swimming in algae-laden fresh water, by any chance?

(Wow you really do NOT understand what you read)

Ironic, coming from the likes of you.

You pithy “Sounds like chaos to me” comment is better off applied to LA where the Crips and Bloods run rampant, & not just in South Central LA anymor, but also in the San Fernando Valley

You are stupid beyond belief if you think Los Angeles compares to Iraq, and probably inbred and little racist to boot. And, last I checked, LA street gangs weren’t killing women to enforce sharia dress codes — maybe you lived in a real bad area.

What you fail to note about this piece is that its discussing the process of D E M O C R A C Y

That’s because the process had nothing to do with any matter being discussed, which was the banality of using the number of casualties withdrawn from an active theater of operations to a remote base as a measure of success. Are you afflicted with both ADD and aphasia?

In other interviews - The Chief of police has stated that he is committed to stopping those gangs and gang violence.

Of course he is committed to stopping crime — he’s the Chief of Police. That’s like saying an oncologist is committed to curing cancer, or your brain specialist is committed to restoring some activity to vast portions of your atrophied gray matter. What is your point?

Iraqi democracy is all of four years old and they already have WOMENES RIGHTS ACTIVISTS!!

Yes, many of whom have had to flee the country because of religious zealots, or been killed for failing to wear hajib. Such progress. . . you’d think those Iraqi bastards would be more grateful, instead of mortaring British bases 90 times a day.

    Comment by Alex — October 9, 2007 @ 5:26 pm
  9. Inbred racist!! Gosh is that your pathetic attempt at ‘trash talkin’.

I lived in LA for years Alex, so don’t tell me what gangs are all about. I speak five languages including Arabic, my parents grew up in the Middle East, I’ve travelled throughout the world, and spent more time in the Middle East than you will ever spend time doing anything worthwhile with your life. And I kick butt in my stilletos!

Gangs are gangs - street gangs enforce their rules — none of which do anything to improve the state of women but alot to help drug dealers… sharia law or the law of the Bloods…its all the same..its all about control, fear and power!

You can’t understand that simple concept… it’s no wonder you can’t begin to understand the complex situation in Iraq. So go back to sticking your head up your ass…you haven’t got a hope in hell of rattling me or proving to anyone that you are anything but one dumb moron.

By the way Alex - not every Police Chief in Iraq is committed to stopping religious acts of violence….it depends on which side of the religious equation they fall on and whether being Iraqi is more important than being a Sunni or a Shite. But you’d know that…if you weren’t so fucking stupid!

Once the General spoke up and offered to protect woman against this kind of religious gang.. he is setting himself up to be killed and he also is saying that being an Iraqi comes before being a shite or a sunni. He is doing what he never would have done 2 years ago, or even one year ago. He is doing what the Brits and the Americans trained him to do, and what they taught him to do by example.

Wrap your head around that one, boygenius! What you don’t know is how he personally feels about the Article in question or what his personal religious leanings are. So your stupid comment comparing him to an oncologist once again displays your utter ignorance of complex situation in Iraq.

And all your bullshit grand proclamations about many people fleeing the country and your inane “democracy has nothing to do with anything are you ADD” blah blah yada yada … won’t make you sound smart. Just dumber and dumber…which is really what you are. One dumb fool. Embrace that state!! It will be alot easier than trying to prove otherwise…..plain and simple… you’re just NOT fucking brilliant!!

“Sounds like chaos to me” HAHAHAHA!
I m swear I’m going to use that line in the next film I’m producing!!

  10. I lived in LA for years Alex, so don’t tell me what gangs are all about.

I know you’re dumb as a brick, but I was telling you want gangs AREN’T about — and that is killing women for violating Sharia dress codes.

Your attempt to make a parallel between LA street violence and Iraq just makes me sad, because it’s so pitiful.

You can’t understand that simple concept…

Simple is an understatement — utterly moronic would be better.

There have been 296 homocides in the entire city of Los Angeles this year.
Estimates for murdered Iraqi civilians ytd start at around 20,000.

displays your utter ignorance of complex situation in Iraq.

As opposed to your brilliant analysis that Iraq’s violence is just like Los Angeles street gangs? That crips and the Mahdi Army are pretty much the same?

Thanks for all the wonderful insight. Yours is a truly dazzling mind.
